Home Cleaning
About once a year carpets need to be cleaned with a commercial
preparation, which can be one of three types:
DRY - An absorbent powder to be sprinkled on the rug, then
vacuumed.
WET - A neutral detergent solution, not soap. Use 1 teaspoon
detergent and 1 teaspoon vinegar per quart of warm water. A detergent
specifically designed for cleaning carpets may be used. Never soap
powder or ammonia!
FOAM SPRAY - Use manufacturer's directions. In all cases this
product should be tested on an inconspicuous place before using and
all residue removed with clean water.
Shipping
Shipping can be arranged for those who are not equipped to
transport their own carpet. It is generally believed that shipment by
common carrier is more feasible then renting a truck or
haul-it-yourself vehicle. By calling a local freight line, you can get
the rate of shipping to your destination.
Weight is approximately three pounds per square yard. If carpet is
shipped by common carrier outside the state of Georgia, there is no
state tax. This helps to offset the shipping cost. You are usually
responsible for the unloading of the merchandise.
Phone & Mail Order
Buyers may order carpet by phone. The dealers listed by the
Dalton-Whitfield Chamber of
Commerce (706-278-7373) are known to be trustworthy and dependable.
You also may order by mail.
Methods of Payment
Most of the carpet dealers will accept personal checks, and many
accept major credit cards.
Preparation
Know Where the carpet will be used, what kind of traffic it
will get.
Know How Many square yards you need. Have a professional
installer measure for you, but if one isn't available, use this
formula: length x width divided by 9.5 square yards. Add 6 inches to
allow for the room being off square, as most rooms are. If carpet is
patterned, allow for matching patterns.
Know What Color you want. Take wallpaper, carpet samples,
paintchips, etc. with you. Compare in daylight.
NOTE: Most carpet comes in 12' widths, some styles are available in
15'widths. Actual width may vary as much as 2 or 3 inches and still be
considered standard.
Selecting Carpet & Rugs
The right carpet or rug can do more to enhance a room than any
other single item in the decorating scheme of your home.
It becomes the focus of a room's personality, adding color, warmth
and charm, and offers practical benefits as well. Carpeting can:
Reduce noise
Lessen incidence of slipping and soften falls
Simplify maintenance by eliminating polishing floors
Provide comfort underfoot
Increase insulation
Care & Maintenance
Carpets and rugs should be vacuumed thoroughly once a week and
twice a week in heavy trafficked areas using upright and beater bar
vacuum attachments. Vacuum attachments should have no teeth or combs
that could damage carpet. Carpets should never be vacuumed when wet
because of danger of electrical shock. Some manufacturers provide care
and maintenance booklets when the carpet is purchased. When the care
instructions so indicate, indoor/outdoor carpet can be hosed down
outside, or sponged clean inside. A special rug rake can be used on
long shags to comb out the yarns and give a smooth, even look. A light
brushing witha stiff broom will give shorter pile carpets a velvety
look.
